Workorder and work order are the same document, and the closed-up spelling is common enough in maintenance software and inside plants that it is worth saying so plainly rather than treating it as a typo. Whichever way you spell it, the thing is one job on one asset, with who did it, when, and what they found. This page is about what belongs on one and what happens when the last of those is left off, which is almost always, because it is the only field that costs the person filling it in anything.
The spelling tells you where somebody learned the term
Workorder as one word is common in North American plants and in older software, where field names could not contain spaces. It carries no different meaning. If you are searching for templates or software, search both, because vendors index one or the other and you will otherwise see half the market.
One job, one asset, whichever spelling
The discipline that matters is not orthographic. Three jobs on three machines recorded as one visit is unreadable a year later, when the question is about one of the three, and the history is the only reason to keep any of this.
The found field is the one that pays
'Completed' is a tick. 'Completed, coupling insert worn, replaced' is the sentence that lets somebody change an interval. On the worked example this site publishes the difference between a breakdown job and the same job planned is $110.40 in labour, and the found field is how you get from one to the other.
Workorder management is priority, assignment and closure
The board, not the form. Priority set from consequence rather than from who shouted, assignment to a person rather than to a team, and closure that is honest about jobs abandoned as well as jobs done.
Questions people ask about workorder
Is workorder a real word?
It is real usage rather than standard spelling. Dictionaries have work order as two words; plants and software often close it up. Nobody will misunderstand you either way.
Does it matter which spelling we use internally?
Only for consistency in search. Pick one for your own documents so that searching your own records finds everything.
What is the minimum a workorder needs?
Asset, date, person, job, what was found, and hours. The first four are always filled in and the last two are the ones that make the record useful.
