Industrial preventive maintenance is the same discipline as any site's, a schedule of tasks against a register, with three things that change on an industrial scale: the register is large and arranged by line, the triggers are meters rather than dates, and the tasks carry isolation and permit steps that are the law. Total preventive maintenance, usually called total productive maintenance, is the plant-wide version where operators, maintenance and engineering share the work. Daily operator checks on every machine. Weekly technician inspections by area. Monthly and run-hour services on the production equipment. Quarterly and annual tasks that need a line down, planned weeks ahead with parts and contractors. Statutory tests on pressure systems, lifting gear and safety devices. What total preventive maintenance adds

In total productive maintenance the operators own the daily care of their machines, the maintenance team owns the planned and corrective work, and engineering owns removing the failure modes that repeat. Overall equipment effectiveness is the plant's measure. What it adds to a schedule is the people: a machine seen every shift by the operator who runs it fails less than one seen monthly by a technician, and a failure mode designed out fails never. What it needs is the same record, because operator tasks and engineering changes both have to show in the history.

The record at scale

An industrial site cannot run its schedule from memory, and the CMMS is not optional at this scale. What is still optional is whether findings are recorded and read: a plant with a thousand assets and empty findings fields has the software and not the programme. The reactive share by line, the schedule compliance by area, and the recurring findings are the three figures the plant manager reads, and all three come from work orders closed honestly at the machine.
